J earned his bachelor's degree in Government and Foreign Affairs with high honors from the University of Virginia and his Doctor of Law degree from the University of Chicago. After law school, J was a judicial clerk to Chief Judge Mary M. Schroeder of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
