Osborn Maledon's criminal law practice works in cooperation with the corporate and litigation practice areas by providing white collar criminal defense and developing strategies to prevent criminal issues from arising. We have represented corporations and individual officers, directors or employees in both Federal and State criminal investigations, including Grand Jury inquiries. We have also worked closely with corporate internal investigations. Attorneys in the criminal law group have represented clients within many substantive areas, including securities fraud, cybercrime, health care fraud, industrial accidents, environmental crimes and financial frauds. Several members of the criminal defense group specialize in criminal related appeals.
The firm also has an active criminal trial practice, and we have been involved in a wide variety of cases, including a full range of criminal defense representation, from non-violent crimes to homicide. We have also been involved in a number of civil rights suits that relate to the placement and treatment of inmates, as well as civil rights cases arising from the conviction and exoneration of defendants in criminal cases. As a result of this work, lawyers in the firm have become particularly knowledgeable about the conditions of confinement in jails and in the Arizona Department of Corrections. The firm has for many years also been involved in cases arising under the False Claims Act.
Attorneys in the criminal law practice area have played a major role in seeking to prevent and remedy wrongful convictions. For example, members of the criminal defense group have been counsel in several cases where individuals who were earlier wrongfully charged or convicted of a serious crime were vindicated. Additionally, lawyers in the firm founded a project known as "The Justice Project" to assist in identifying cases of wrongful conviction or manifest injustice for incarcerated individuals who lack resources to plead their own cases.
The criminal defense practice area has members who are some of the most active in the criminal defense and legal communities. Our members include the past President of the American Judicature Society (a national organization committed to quality administration of justice).
