Accounting Manager 

Job Overview:

We are a 50 attorney, 100 employee, Phoenix law firm, looking for an Accounting Manager. This is an important leadership role responsible for the accounting operations of the firm. This position reports to and works closely with the Executive Director to develop and improve financial procedures, follow best practices for the law firm’s accounting department and contribute to the fiscal health of the firm.

The Accounting Manager will provide strong, practical strategic accounting and financial reporting and assistance to the firm’s Executive Director. You will work independently on certain core activities and will manage the day-to-day operations of the accounting department as well as supervise and provide leadership to the firm’s accounting staff. Together with this team, the Accounting Manager will provide oversight of all accounting and financial analytic processes at the direction of the Executive Director. The Accounting Manager will foster a highly responsive culture within the accounting team and provide exemplary services to attorneys and clients across practice groups.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for month-end and year-end close of accounting system
  • Prepare monthly financial reporting and other reports as needed by firm leadership
  • Responsible for the administration and compliance of the firm’s 401(k) profit sharing plan
  • Daily monitoring and reporting cash needs and receipts
  • Reviewing, and in some cases, signing accounts payable checks
  • Reconciling all balance sheet accounts
  • Monitoring the firm’s trust account to ensure compliance with State Bar rules
  • Supervise the processing and general ledger recording of bi-monthly payrolls
  • Overseeing and recording loan payments
  • Assist with the annual operating budgets
  • Creating associate attorney reports for mid-year and annual review; distributing corelating compensation statements
  • Reviewing and recording depreciation
  • Overseeing property tax reporting and payment
  • Completing the firm’s worker’s compensation audit annually
  • Computing interest calculations on an ad hoc basis
  • Assisting with accounting software and workflow issues on an ad hoc basis
  • Overseeing the destruction of accounting records
  • Other duties as needed

Performance and competencies:

  • Apply advanced computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office (advanced Excel) and law firm financial reporting software
  • Direct, oversee, and manage the accounting team’s functions: payroll, billing, accounts payable, and accounts receivable
  • A strong client service philosophy to provide support in a highly responsive environment
  • Ability to establish priorities consistent with the firm’s expectations
  • Possess impeccable ethics and a familiarity in dealing with highly sensitive data
  • Proactive with forming and maintaining banking and third-party relationships
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to handle stressful situations in a calm, composed manner
  • Strong decision-making, follow-up, follow-through, priority setting, and attention to detail skills required
  • Demonstrated ability to practice good judgment
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision

Education and experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, or related discipline
  • Five-plus years of progressive leadership with broad-based accounting/finance experience and management in a professional services setting
  • Law firm or other financial/professional services environment experience preferred
  • Direct supervisory experience of accounting and strong team-building skills required
